Ontario legal information · Ottawa and Eastern Ontario

01 · Understanding the issue

“It was an Uber” does not identify the complete insurance arrangement.

Confirm the platform, driver, vehicle, trip stage, app status, passenger list and purpose of the journey. Preserve the receipt and any in-app safety or support report.2

The injured person should not be expected to resolve competing insurers before reporting the claim. Provide accurate information, keep all coverage letters and track who accepted or redirected each notice.

02 · Insurance and responsibility

Personal, platform and statutory coverage may interact.

Accident benefits

The injured passenger or road user enters the Ontario priority system for statutory benefits.

Rideshare liability coverage

Coverage may depend on app status and the commercial use described by the platform policy.

Other responsible drivers

A separate vehicle’s driver and insurer may share or bear responsibility for the collision.

03 · Evidence

The digital trip record is as important as the scene record.

01Ride receipt

Preserve the platform, timestamps, route, price, driver, vehicle and pickup or destination data.

02App and messages

Save support reports, status screens, communications and any platform incident number.

03Collision evidence

Keep police information, photographs, witnesses and insurance details from every vehicle.

04Injury and loss

Document treatment, missed work, expenses and the effect on transportation and daily life.

A transit injury may involve more than one reporting and insurance route, even when no private vehicle is involved.
04 · Timing and decisions

Digital records should be preserved before an account or trip view changes.

Download or screenshot the complete trip information and request platform records where appropriate. Notify the relevant automobile insurers without assuming one will handle every claim.3

Track the accident-benefit and civil timelines separately. A dispute about which policy applies should not stop medical and wage evidence from developing.

05 · When legal help may matter

How a personal injury lawyer may help after this collision.

The lawyer's role should be tied to this accident: identify who may be responsible, find every policy that may respond, preserve evidence and build the claim around the person's actual recovery and loss.

  • Determine app status and potentially applicable policies
  • Preserve platform and trip evidence
  • Coordinate statutory benefits with the liability investigation
  • Address coverage disagreement without losing the underlying injury record

Not every file requires every step or legal representation. The work should respond to the actual dispute, evidence gap or decision that is approaching.
