Ontario legal information · Ottawa and Eastern Ontario

01 · Understanding the issue

Start with the real change, then test the legal route.

Separate treatment, transportation, attendant care, housekeeping and other claimed expenses instead of combining them under one label.2

A receipt proves payment but may not prove entitlement; include the plan, recommendation or explanation that connects the cost.

02 · Insurance and responsibility

Keep the connected questions separate.

Benefit entitlement

Identify the SABS benefit and any required approval.

Clinical and functional proof

Support medical necessity and accident connection.

Insurer decision

Track the insurer’s item-by-item response.

03 · Evidence

Build a record that another person can verify.

01First record

Invoice date, provider and service.

02Medical course

Clinical recommendation or approved plan.

03Daily function

Who paid and proof of actual payment.

04Decision documents

Submitted form, delivery proof and explanation of benefits.

Keep originals and submit a readable index with proof of payment.
04 · Timing and decisions

Protect the next decision before the record is complete.

Submit complete expenses within the applicable requirements and do not let receipts accumulate without review.3

Calendar any denial from the written explanation even if the insurer requests more material.

05 · When legal help may matter

How a personal injury lawyer may help with accident benefits.

A useful review should reduce the file to a defined benefit, disputed period, governing test and evidence problem—then explain the available response in plain language.

  • Classify each expense
  • Reconcile invoices and payment
  • Connect cost to medical need
  • Challenge only the disputed item and reason

Not every file requires every step or legal representation. The work should respond to the actual dispute, evidence gap or decision that is approaching.
